Hate Crime in Mississippi: White Teens Run Over Black Man (Video)

UPDATES, March 22, 2012: Multiple news sources report that the Mississippi teen who drove the car in James Craig Anderson's murder has been sentenced to double life. Deryl Dedmon, 19, pleaded guilty to the murder and to committing a hate crime, and on Wednesday afternoon, March 21, Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill told him the following:
"This craven act isn't who we are. Whatever excuse you offer, forget that. There is no excuse. [...] The state of Mississippi condemns this despicable crime."
Dedmon told the judge he was sorry for what he did and has since found religion.

The other teens who were with Dedmon in the car have also pleaded guilty. Read more at CNN.

The video above is disturbing. The ringleader expresses no remorse. The white teens involved drove to a predominantly black section of Jackson, Mississippi, in search of a black person to hurt.

From CNN:
James Craig Anderson, 49, was run over and killed on June 26. Authorities say a group of white teens targeted Anderson because he was black. The suspected ringleader, Deryl Dedmon, Jr., 18, has been charged with murder. Dedmon faces possible double life sentence for the murder.
This is indeed a sad story, more proof that we are not in a post-racial society and possibly the story further refutes the common thesis that young people today are not influenced by racism. Nevertheless, there is a glimmer of progress. Mississippi authorities are not trying to cover this murder up or claiming it was not motivated by hatred as they would have done in the past.

Whether it was racially motivated or not-the crime was the act of a cold blooded killer.

I heard a comment on CNN tonight. In a sense, they wanted to blame this on the parenting of the teens guilty of this crime. As a parent of a son who was once very rebellious, I searched through my mind to find a reason, a fault of my own, for his behavior. I knew I had given 110% to be the best mom I could be. Sometimes the fault lies outside our control. Consider the music, the movies, the video games, the sexual exploitation..this could go on and on. Just don't place blame where it does not belong. Deryl's parents are hurting right now. I can only imagine.

As a parent, I can understand where the "anonymous" parent poster is coming from. Still, a child under our roof IS our responsibility. If a child is not autistic or suffers from any other major ailment, then "rebellion" is NEVER an excuse for a child's behavior. Using your own words... up until about 16 (with a job), the "...music, the movies, the video games..." are ALL paid for by the parents.

I'm not placing 100% blame on the parents for a child's behavior, but parents are not 100% free of blame either.

Anonymous @ 4:12 A.M. This article at the Huffington Post makes the same case, which is that all the teens involved should be facing charges.

Yes, I think all of the young men should be charged. Only the one for murder but the rest for assault. I also blame the parents, however. It would be interesting to know if his parents used the N----- word. We probably all know people who are racist and they will teach their children hate. Some of these people are poorer whites who have to have a whipping boy! They think,"I may be poor but at least I am better than those N------." Actually I think it would be good for all of us to ask ourselves the question, "Who is our whipping boy?"

Ms.Brenda Gray, you can't always blame the parents for their children behavior. Some childre come from the best of homes. And get involed with the wrong group of people and its all over. And the parents suffer.

I think everyone in any vehicle shud be prosecuted to the fullest... There has been robberies n the past an sum1 is killed n the process an whether they're involved or not they've served life or death penalty ESPECIALLY n the black community as well as whites... This case shud not be any different. There was a motive an plot involved.... Cdell

Mississippi is known for racial prejudicy. The state has been that way since its existence. Hatred is taught, encouraged, and tolerated by all who live there.Sadly to say, I know that they will get away with this, because of the mentality of the people and the color of their skin. Non-whites are considered to be less than animals. The stupid rednecks have not learned there lessons yet, because they keep getting away with murder. Remember Emmett Tillman and many more that were tortured and murdered. My condolences go out to the victim's family. PEOPLE, PLEASE WAKE-UP AND STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS, IF NOT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER CIVIL WAR!!!

Anonymous that's a pretty judgmental statement, huh?
Everyone? Do I? Oh, that's right I must because I'm white...oh and I must be a 'redneck' as well. What happened here was horrible, and a lot of work is going to have to be done so Miss. isn't set back 50 years. But don't take it the other way. Come on.

I've read the others' comments but, I'm sorry, I think the parents are to blame. My mother always said: "Children Learn What They Live." There's even a poem that my mother had... I'm sure one could look up the poem on the internet. I am hoping that the young kid gets the MAXIMUM sentence he can get. It will give a message to others that one can't get away with this. And that young murderer? What a shame to take a life so callously and not think about the poor man having a family who will mourn him, and the murderer has now wasted his own life also. Thank God for cameras.

P.S. What's up with all of the Anonymous comments? Stand up for what you believe in people!! Don't hide behind an "Anonymous" moniker!

It is amazing seeing this because kids of this day and time are way more tolerant of other race. Therefore, I must conclude that this kids family promoted racism throughout this kids life for him and the rest to have such unfounded hatred for a person because of their color is unbelievable.
